The small cross cardan shaft is a key component widely used in mechanical transmission systems, mainly used to connect transmission shafts with two axes at an angle. This type of universal joint plays an important role in various mechanical equipment due to its compact structure, high transmission efficiency, and strong adaptability.

The small cross cardan shaft (WS type) is a universal joint device that adopts a cross axis structure, specifically designed to connect transmission systems with two axis angles of β ≤ 45 °. Its core components include two fork shaped joints, a cross shaft, and four needle roller bearings, which achieve power transmission and angle compensation through precise mechanical coordination. Compared with large universal shafts, small cross universal shafts have the characteristics of small size, light weight, and high speed, making them particularly suitable for transmission situations with limited space.

Structurally, small cross universal shafts are mainly divided into three types: single cross type (WSD), double cross type (WS), and expandable type (WSS). The single cross structure is simple and suitable for situations with small angular deviations; The double cross type is composed of two single cross cardan shafts connected by a spline shaft in the middle, which can compensate for larger axis deviations; The expandable type adds axial displacement compensation function, which is particularly suitable for transmission systems with axial movement requirements. In terms of material selection, the key components of the small cross cardan shaft are usually made of high-quality alloy steel. Cross shafts are often made of materials such as 40Cr, 40CrNi, 20CrMo, or 20CrMnVB. After heat treatment, the hardness reaches 58-62HRC, ensuring wear resistance under high loads; Other parts are mostly made of 35 or 45 steel, with heat treatment hardness controlled within the range of 48-52HRC. For special working conditions, stainless steel material can also be selected and subjected to surface treatments such as blackening, nickel plating, or zinc plating to improve corrosion resistance.

Diversified connection methods are also a major feature of the small cross cardan shaft. According to application requirements, various shaft hole forms such as cylindrical holes, keyway cylindrical holes, and square holes can be provided. The same hole type can be used at both ends, or different hole types can be combined, such as cylindrical holes and keyway cylindrical holes, cylindrical holes and square holes, etc., providing great flexibility for equipment design. During installation, interference fit or key connection is usually used to ensure the reliability of torque transmission.
