Drum gear coupling is an important mechanical basic component, which is a rigid flexible coupling device. It is widely used in heavy industries such as metallurgy, mining, lifting and transportation, petrochemicals, and steel rolling machinery, mainly responsible for torque transmission tasks under low-speed heavy load conditions.

The core structure of the drum toothed coupling consists of an inner gear sleeve and an outer gear sleeve. The external gear adopts a drum shaped design with spherical tooth tips, which enables the coupling to have excellent deviation compensation capability.

During operation, the two axes generate relative angular displacement, and the tooth surfaces of the inner and outer teeth periodically slide axially relative to each other. drum gear couplings allow for significant angular displacement and can compensate for angular errors, axial and radial installation errors caused by misalignment of the two connecting shafts, adapting to large angular deviations between the two axes.

Advantages and Characteristics

  1. Strong load-bearing capacity: Compared to spur gear couplings, drum gear couplings have a 15% to 20% increase in load-bearing capacity and a 50% increase in allowable angular displacement.

  2. High transmission efficiency: Through the drum shaped tooth contact design, the drum shaped tooth coupling avoids stress concentration and achieves a transmission efficiency of up to 99.7%.

  3. Strong deviation compensation capability: It has the ability to compensate for radial, axial, and angular axis deviations, and can adapt to complex working conditions.

  4. Low noise and long maintenance cycle: Due to its compact structure, small turning radius, and optimized tooth surface design, the drum gear coupling produces low noise during operation and has a relatively long maintenance cycle.

There are generally two methods for processing drum shaped teeth, namely the machining method and the enveloping machining method. The transformation into machining method is achieved by the forward and backward movement of the worktable relative to the tool to achieve the rotation and feed of the gear blank; The enveloping processing rule is that the tooth blank only undergoes rotational motion, while the center of the rolling cutter undergoes circular motion to complete the vertical feed and horizontal feed of the tooth blank. At present, the envelope processing method is commonly used.

High speed drum gear couplings are usually lubricated with lubricating oil, and the tooth surface requires continuous lubrication. Lubricating oil should be drained smoothly, otherwise the temperature of the tooth surface will rise and water and dirt will accumulate. Lubricating oil needs to be filtered through a high-precision oil filter with a filtration degree of less than 10 microns. Some important high-speed crown gear couplings can also adopt the structure of oil collecting groove to ensure sufficient lubrication of the tooth surface.
